FERIA DE ABRIL IN NEW YORK
For the first time in its history, New York will be able to enjoy the
taste of the "Feria de Abril", a Flamenco extravaganza. The fair has
entitled "Sevillanas y Macarena", and will include Shows, Performers,
Competitions, Exhibitions and Public Participation. The event will take
place at the Javits Centre, 11th Avenue and 35th St. during the weekend
of May 3rd.
The hours are:
Saturday 3rd, noon to 9:30 PM; Sunday 4th, noon to 7:00 PM. Admission is
$10.00 per adult with children under ten free. Groups rates available in

ART
"Manuel Alvarez Bravo" A retrospective of his photographs. At the
Museum of Modern Art, 11W 53rd Street. Through May 18. Hours: Sunday to
Tuesdays and Saturdays from 11 AM to 6 PM; Thursdays and Fridays from
Noon to 8:30 PM; closed Wednesdays.
DANCE
American Ballet Theatre, one of the leading Ballet companies in the
world, has announced their 1997 Season at the Metropolitan Opera House,
May 12 to July 5. The Season promises to be extraordinary, and the
Company’s two youngest principal dancers promise to bring the house down
once more in each of their performances: Angel Corella and Paloma
Herrera.
Angel Corella was born in Madrid in 1975. He began his ballet studies in
Colmenar Viejo, and later, studied in Madrid with Karemia Moreno. In May,
1991, Mr. Corella won First Prize in the National Ballet Competition of
Spain. In December, 1994, he won the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the
Concours International de Danse de Paris, dancing the pas de deux from
Don Quixote and Le Corsaire. In April, 1995, he joined American Ballet
Theatre as a Soloist.
Paloma Herrera was born in Buenos Aires, where she started ballet lessons
at the age of seven with Olga Ferri, a former Prima Ballerina at the
Colon Theatre. At an early age, she was a first prize winner at several
major competitions in South America, and, at the age of 11, studied at
the Minsk Ballet School in Russia before returning to Buenos Aires to
dance the role of Cupid in Don Quixote at the Teatro Colon. She won the
Gold medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna, Bulgaria in
1990. After the competition, Hector Zaraspe invited her to continue her
studies at the School of American Ballet in New York. After just six
months, she joined American Ballet Theatre as a member of the corps de
ballet in June of 1991, was promoted to Soloist in June of 1993, and to
Principal Dancer in March of 1995.
Together they will dance the leading roles in two full length productions
of Cinderella and Coppelia. The performances will take place on May 21,
May 30 and June 5, 1997. Individually, their schedule in May is as

THEATRE
REPERTORIO ESPAÑOL
The 1996/1997 Season , the 20th Season for this company, promises a
variety of Music, Theatre and Dance for the pleasure of the Hispanic
residents of New York as well as the visitors looking for a new-world
approach to Spanish Arts.
The month of May will be practically dedicated to Spain.
Pilar Rioja, ‘The Queen of Spanish Dance’, will perform on May 10 and 11
at 3 PM; May 12 and 14 at 10 AM, and May 14 and 15 at 7 PM.
"Don Quijote y Sancho Panza", the Dominican version of the novel by
Cervantes, will be offered on May 2 at 11 AM and 3:30 PM; May 3 at 3 PM;
May 6 at 10 AM and 12 Noon and May 8 at 7 PM.
Last but certainly not least, the long expected production of Yerma, one
of the most powerful plays by Federico Garcia Lorca, arrives during the
last week of April.
Performances are: April 29 at 10 AM and 12 Noon; May
1 at 10 Am, 12 Noon and 7 PM; May 4 at 3 PM; May 7 at 11 AM; May 9 at 8
PM; May 15 and 10 AM and 12 Noon; May 16 at 8 PM; May 17 at 3 PM; May 20
at 11 AM; May 22 at 11 AM; May 29 at 11 AM; May 30 at 8 PM; June 1 at 3
PM and June 7 at 3 PM. The production is directed by Rene Buch, and
sponsored by the Spanish Consulate in New York and the Laura Pels
Foundation.

IATI
The International Institute of Theatrical Arts (IATI) will present the
world premiere of "Caprichos", a new comedy by the prestigious Spanish
dramaturgist Santiago Moncada. The play has been produced and directed
by Angel Gil Orrios. Gill Orrios was born in Zaragoza, and graduated
from the National School of Dramatic Arts. He has lived in New York
since 1979. He has won several international prizes for his works in
theatre, cinema and TV. One of them is the Silver Medal at the Academie
des Arts-Ciences-Lettres du Paris. The cast includes Soledad Lopez,
winner of the ACE award to Best Actress in 1994, 1995 and 1996; Francisco
G. Rivela and Alfredo Huereca.
The performances will take place from
April 22 through May 4, on Thursdays and Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3
PM and 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. General Admission is $15, Senior
Citizens and Students $12 and Group Rates $10 p/adult.

CULTURE
"CHATTING WITH CERVANTES"
A program presented by the Cervantes Institute every first Thursday of
the month. Broadcast by CUNY-TV Channel 75, brings an outstanding
personality in the cultural Hispanic scene to New York for a half hour
interview.
The program is sponsored by the Cervantes Institute and CUNY-TV under the
executive direction of Prof. Jerry Carlson. Raquel Chang Rodríguez,
professor at City College, CUNY and Jose Maria Conget, Director of
Cultural Activities of the Institute, co-host the program with an
excellent audience rating.
This month, on the 1st. of May, the program will present an interview
with Humberto Solas, the Cuban born movie producer and director who will
present his last work, "El Siglo de las Luces", a co-production with
France, based on the famous novel by Alejo Carpentier.
MEET THE WRITER SERIES
As part of the series Meet the Writer, the Instituto Cervantes will
present during May three different programs which cover a wide spectrum
in contemporary Spanish literature.
On May 6, there will a presentation covering four literary genres: essay
with Manuel Caballero, poetry with Rafael Cádenas, drama with Román
Chalbaud and novel with Ana Teresa Torres.
On May 9, the presentation will be on Children and Youth Literature. The
authors who will present their works will be Juan Farias (La Coruña,
Spain, 1935), Francisco Hinojosa (Mexico, 1954) and Pilar Molina Llorente
(Madrid, Spain). The colloquy, in Spanish, will take place at Brookdale
Center of Hunter College, 425 East 25th Street (between 1st. Avenue and
FDR)
READINGS
On May 8, Alvaro Mutis (Bogotá, 1923) will perform a reading of his
narrative work. The reading will be also done in English by Edith
Grossman. This event is sponsored by New York University. The reading
will take place at the American Society, 680 Park Avenue. This event
will be the closing of the program title The Genesis of the Text:
Translating Latin
American Literature, presented by the American Society through May 8.
BOOK PRESENTATIONS AND LECTURES
There will be two new book presentations at Library of the Instituto
Cervantes, 122 E 42nd St., Suite 807, New York.
On May 16, Professor Eduardo Malefakis, from Columbia University, will
present the book La Guerra de España 1936-1939, published under his
co-ordination and editing. The book comprises 21 chapter written by 21
historians and intellectuals. The Prologue and Epilogue authorship
belongs to Prof. Malefakis.
On May 30, the General Consul of Spain in New York, Ambassador José
Manuel Allendesalazar, will present his book "Notes on the
Hispanic-American diplomatic relations, 1763-1895". The presentation
will be at 6:00 PM.
On May 23, also at the Library, there will be a lecture by Javier Tusell,
on The historical role of the King of Spain (El rey como personaje
histórico). The lecture will be given in Spanish.
The Cervantes Institute is a place where Spanish culture is promoted at

FILM
FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER
From May 1 to May 4, the Society will present a series called "From whom
the Bell Tolls: Reverberations from the Spanish Civil War", and as the
name indicates will feature films about the Spanish Civil War. The 13
titles that have been chosen for this series, all of them fascinating,
will represent different ideologies and periods. Some of the titles are
Sierra de Teruel, which is the only film made by Andre Malraux, Spanish
Earth, Tu nombre envenena mis sueños, En el balcón vacío, and one of the
rare exhibitions of the only movie written by a dictator as means to
praise the coup which placed him in power: Raza, whose script was written
by Francisco Franco. Other modern pieces include also La prima Angélica
by Saura, Canciones para después de una guerra, the two documentaries
Chronicles of Hope and Forever activists and the Alain Resnais classic,
Guernica.
All sessions will take place in The Walter Reade Theater, in the Film
Society of Lincoln Center 165 West 65th Street(between Broadway and
Amsterdam Avenues on the Plaza Level).
