MOTRIL - PLACES OF INTEREST
- The High Church of Encarnation
Dating from 1510 it was built as a fortress to defend the town against moorish
and pirate invasions. It is the oldest monument preserved.
- Church of Carmen
It dates from 1538 and is in baroque style, consisting of a vaulted nave
with a hemispheric dome above the main chapel.
- Church of the Virgin of the Head
Dedicated to the Patron Virgin of Motril. The sculptured image dates from
the XVth century when some Portuguese seamen stole it from Corinth,
and due to a storm their ship was wrecked in front of Motril´s coast.
Baroque style and most significant is the Dressing Chamber of the
Virgin. In XV11th century the Hermitage was turned into a convent for
Franciscan nuns.
- The Notary Church
It dates from 1580 as convent of the Friars-minor of Victory.
- House of the Palm
Dating from 1604 and founded by the Marquis of Algarinejo.
- Motril Town Hall
Built in 1631, its façade is baroque and ceiling decorations
in mudéjar style.
- Capuchins Church
Built as a hermitage in 1641 in honour of Saint Anton.
At a later date, in order to find a use for the hermitage,
in mudéjar style, it was enlarged to form a one-nave church.
- Hermitage of Saint Anthony
Dating from 1679 and is in baroque style.
- Carchuna Castle
Dating from 1783 as a defensive type of fortification.

SALOBREÑA - PLACES OF INTEREST
- Moslem Salobreña
- The Castle, due to its civil and military importance, kept in
use until very recent times. It was a fortress prison defending
the western region of the alluvial plain at the mouth of the
Guadalleo river. Open 12 hours daily.
- The Medina.
Surrounding the fortress was a human population
called the Medina (City) which had three quarters - the Albayzin
located between the fortress and Library Tower, the Village
occupying the northern area next to the castle, and the
Brocal north of the village.
- Christian Salobreña
Parish Church Temple but on top of the Moslem mosque.
It is a construction in the mudéjar style of the first half of
the XVth century later modified during the XVll-XVlll and
present centuries.
