Leaving Mecina - Fondales we are immediately 'on trail', taking in the
spectacular Mediterranean Alpujarran scenery, encountering long,
wide,
sweeping pistas, streams and river-bed crossings, picturesque
Andalucian
villages, single mule tracks, abandoned settlements, through pine
and cork
forests, demanding uphill and mind-blowing descents. All this and
a great
deal more, at Mecina - Fondales. We have found it beneficial to
guide
riders, as experience
of this personal type of
mountain biking
adventure and maps
available for this area
tend to be unreliable.
Non mountain biking
partners are most
welcome (please see
price guide). For the
real enthusiast, Veleta
Pass at 3480m is a
tremendous challenge.
Snowcapped for the winter months, Dec - March, it is the highest
mountain
pass in Europe. A popular day excursion with our riders taking
"Scooby
Bus" to within 5 miles of the summit on the North slope, and ride
over the
top, off road, back down to our village concluding the last few
miles on
single track is just mindblowing. A 25 mile descent right to our
back door.
Alternatively the Pass can be climbed off road taking in the
famous "Ice
man" descent down into Granada.
Ciclo Montana Espana assisted MB journalist Steve Thomas for a
feature
on the Iceman route, which is an old packhorse ice trade route
from the
Sierra Nevada into Granada.
Most routes include a lunch time stop at a restaurant
or bar,
support vehicle back-up is also available. As well as
recreational
sightseeing riding, we also welcome any competition riders to
base
themselves at Mecina - Fondales for training. Past results show
the
terrain
and climate here is ideal for improving technique and overall
fitness.
